Tim Powers, Student Services Manager

A former opera and musical theatre performer, Tim Powers spent his summers in undergrad touring and working in the wineries of the Finger Lakes AVA in upstate New York. While his opera background has certainly helped with the various languages of the wine world, Tim credits his history in performance and entertainment with helping him understand how to connect with and educate others. The most recent example of which was when he performed in the Off-Broadway show “Imbible: A Spirited History of Drinking”, where he detailed the history of alcohol and fermentation, while singing in barbershop four-part harmony.

Prior to joining the Commonwealth Wine School team, Tim most recently served as the manager for the Brookline branch of Vinodivino, where he strove to educate his customers and expand their palates, focusing on organic, biodynamic, and sustainable wines from small, family-run wineries.

Tim is a WSET Certified Educator, and holds the Level 3 Award in Wines with Merit, the Level 3 Award in Sake with Distinction, and the Level 3 Award in Spirits with Distinction. Additionally, he was awarded the Wonderful Company of Distiller’s Americas Prize for his achievement on the WSET Spirits exam. He is also a Certified Pommelier™ through the American Cider Association, a Cider Judge through the BJCP, and has a Master’s in Music from Arizona State, and a Bachelor’s in Music from Ithaca College. In addition to wine, Tim continues to hone his musical skills, as well as being an avid outdoorsmen, exploring as many National Parks and Forests as he can.
