Orvieto Masterclass

Tuesday, February 23, 6-8:00pm

The Orvieto wine-producing region in Umbria is a stunning area filled with history, cultural richness, geological wonders, and extraordinary wines.  In fact, travelers can visit ancient Etruscan gravity-fed wine cellars.   The city rises dramatically above vertical faces of tufo (volcanic material).  Prior to the late 20th century, the white wines of Orvieto were the only Umbrian wines with a longstanding reputation.  Just recently, Orvieto has undergone a quality revolution, yet the pleasures of these wines are still under-recognized.  In addition to dry and sparkling styles, small quantities of wines with noble rot (botrytis) develop due to the morning fogs and mild, sunny afternoons.

With the assistance of the Orvieto Consorzio, Jo-Ann Ross, Italian Wine Scholar™  and IWS PREP Instructor, will be our guide through TEN wine samples as we learn about a wine poised for a Renaissance. Prior wine knowledge is not required to participate in this class.

You can choose to take this class at Commonwealth Wine School or Online through Zoom. Tastings are provided as part of the in-person class, or available for pick up at our school if you select the Online with Tasting Kit registration option. For those who choose to register for the online class only, wine lists will be provided ahead of time so that you may taste along at home.
